Jo-anne Cox is a boundary-defying performer/composer based in London and working across the UK. She is neurodivergent and plays a sparkling purple ‘dragon cello’, a symbol of power and resistance defying society’s expectations to fit the norm. Together they forge a unique fusion blending the warmth of strings with magical electronic textures, dance rhythms, and evocative melody lines.
Cox’s bold new four-track EP Defiant Journey introduces elements from classical, experimental, and electronic scenes, for fans of classical fusion, cinematic, ambient electronic music and the power of the cello. Jo-anne is influenced by cellists cutting their own style such as Tina Guo, Zoe Keating, Bison Rouge and Steven Sharp Nelson.
The EP features collaborations with respected artists; Joy Stacey - producer/recording engineer, whose credits include Islet, Shygirl and the tv series Derry Girls, and Valeria Radchenko - singer-songwriter/producer, who has performed across London venues such as Ormside Projects, Corsica and The Bath House.
Cox will debut Defiant Journey’s live show (featuring Radchenko) at the influential Filly Brook venue in Leytonstone in March 2026.
Cox has previously performed at major London venues including Koko, ICA, Queen Elizabeth Hall, The Barbican, The National Theatre, The Round Chapel, The National Gallery, The Vortex, and Rich Mix. Her music has featured in the top ten of the UK Specialist Classical Chart and appeared on John Kelly’s album Better Late than Never, as featured on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe.
Working across music, sensory theatre and cross artform collaboration, Jo-anne Cox ‘s performances are intimate, deeply moving and often audience interactive.
“Jo-anne has made a name for herself for her unique exploration of her instrument and through unique collaborations, producing performances which are alluring, fascinating and draws audiences in. Her approach to composing and performing highlights her curious mind and her holistically positive slant to music-making.” - Ben Lunn, composer and conductor, 2023 Royal Philharmonic Society composers programme. 2025 Sonnet, performed by Royal Northern Sinfonia. 2026 conducted More Than Meets the Eye with players of the London Philharmonic.
With many thanks to Together!2012 for being so supportive of my music and encouraging me to get the EP out.
